Founded by Angel Mehta in 2000, The Enlightenment Project is an attempt to help promote self-awareness and rational thinking skills amongst children in third world countries. The Enlightenment Project's basic mission is to help combat the spread of fundamentalism and blind faith by encouraging children to think about their own cultures in new, innovative ways. To date, Sterling-Hoffman has created and sponsored Enlightenment Project essay competitions involving hundreds of students in:

- Wenchi, Ghana
- Dungar, India
