Rwandan Kids Camera Project

In December 2006, Sterling-Hoffman staff traveled to Rwanda with the goal of distributing 70 donated cameras to students throughout the country. With these cameras, the students would be able to take pictures, documenting what was happening in their village, and then sell the photos to newspapers and other publications, earning an income in the process. Through the efforts of a student committee in the tiny village of Kigeme, all of the cameras were distributed to children throughout Rwanda. Current student photographers are able to earn a significant income of between $350 and $500 a year.

In 2005, Sterling-Hoffman decided that it would begin creating a handful of special job openings at its offices in India specifically for orphans, victims of the child sex trade, and survivors of domestic abuse. The goal is to help these women and children lift themselves out of life on the streets or shelters by giving them an opportunity to obtain professional skills and training in an environment where they can be safe from exploitation or harassment.

'Out of the Cold'

'Out of the Cold' began in 1988 in Toronto after the death of an anonymous homeless man (known simply as 'George') motivated a group of students at St. Michael's High School to begin helping homeless people in the city. It has spread across Canada and provides dinners on the coldest nights of the year, as well as showers, nurses, basic medical care, and recreational facilities to the homeless. Sterling-Hoffman has sponsored holiday dinners for shelters in Toronto and involved its staff in serving and entertaining on various occasions. Click here to learn more about 'Out of the Cold'.

Save Darfur Initiative

The genocide in Sudan has continued for over 3 years, resulting in the deaths of 400,000 people. Sterling-Hoffman made the decision in 2006 to begin proactively supporting the Save Darfur Coalition (www.savedarfur.org) by helping to promote awareness of the situation in Darfur via Sterling-Hoffman's own publication (The Sterling Report) as well as publications of its portfolio companies.

Flood Relief in the Slums

Several areas of India were devastated by monsoon flooding in 2004/2005. Those living in the shanty towns and slums were the hardest hit, often having their modest shelters destroyed and belongings carried away by the water. Sterling-Hoffman employees hand-delivered a week's supply of food and blankets to over 200 people in one of the hardest hit slums in Gujarat state.

Giving Back To The Community
